11 Great Books on Writing and Speaking

There are a few books that I think are absolute gold when it comes to writing and speaking, that serves as reference materials for the book I’m currently writing on, and that I wish to share so that you can use them in your work too:

  1. The Political Speechwriter’s Companion, by Robert Ltehrman, former speechwriter for Al Gore. This is the best book on speechwriting that I’ve ever come across and I cannot recommend it warmly enough.

  2. TED Talks, by Chris Anderson, Head of TED, is another of my very favorite books on speechwriting and speaking, and that complements The Political Speechwriter’s Companion in a great way.

  3. The Artist’s Way, by Julia Cameron, is one of the world’s best books on how to free your creativity. It has sold in literally millions of copies since the 90’s and for good reason. The book contains a 12 weeks program that will free your inner artist week by week, and every time I do The Artist’s Way my life changes for the better in desired as well as unexpected ways.

  4. Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg, is one of my very favorite books on writing. It was published in 1986 and along with a book there’s now also a great audiobook narrated by the author where she also comments what she wrote back then and what she thinks now. Natalie Goldberg also offers writing courses.

  5. The Writer's Journey, by Christopher Vogler, is a more accessible book on The Hero's Journey, the archetypes and other concepts developed and previously presented by Joseph Campbell.

  6. The War on Art and The Artist’s Journey, by Steven Pressfield, are great for getting through your inner resistance. He has also written several other really good books on creativity.

  7. Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott, is another great book on writing.

  8. On Writing, by Stephen King, is also another great book on writing.

  9. The Creative Habit, by Twyla Tharp, is a great book with personal notes on how to live a creative life.

  10. What Do You Do With an Idea?, written by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom, is a gorgeous book that I keep loving and gifting.

  11. Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work, by Austin Kleon, are two small books but with a lot of very helpful content on what the titles promises.
